Poetry Slams and Debates
- Brooklyn Book Festival: September 16-23, with Children's Day on Sat September 21 @ Brooklyn Borough Hall and Metrotech Commons, Brooklyn.
- New York Comic Con: October 3-6 - Features comic and graphic novel writers and artists, stars of TV shows and films, contests, and demonstrations.
- The Schomburg Center's Black Comic Book Festival January 18-19, 2020 (TBD)
- New York Teen Author Festival: March 24-31, 2019, various locations
- Free Comic Book Day: Saturday, May 5, 2020 @ participating comic book stores

- KidsLIVE and TeenLIVE events at the New York Public Library feature conversations, debates, and performances with authors, artists, filmmakers, and designers.
- New York City Urban Debate League: The largest urban debate league in the nation.
Poetry Slams and Debates
- Urban Word provides platforms for critical literacy, youth development, and leadership through writing, college prep, and performance opportunities. (See website calendar)
- NYC Youth Poet Laureate Slam Finals: April 2020, The Apollo Theatre (see website for updated information).
Resources for Funding and Literacy Information
- Afterschool Alliance's New York Life Aim High Grant competition for $10,000
- Scholastic Book Wizard: A very useful database that offers summaries of over 50,000 books, as well as information about book reading levels, including Guided Reading, Lexile® Measure, DRA, and Grade Level reading level. The site also links to book lists, lesson plans, author interviews, and student activities.
- Young Adult Library Services Association Book Awards and Book Lists
- The ARISE Coalition website provides additional guidance around literacy instruction, resources for struggling readers, and NYCDOE's current literacy goals.
