How many of these standards are you currently meeting in your after-school programming? How might they need to be adapted/adjusted/understood for the after-school environment?
- Understand the Common Core standards related to vocabulary (see below) and how they should influence your instruction in the after school context.
- Make strategic decisions when selecting vocabulary to work with and ways to integrate technology to support vocabulary learning.
- Use evidence-based approaches to vocabulary instruction that will best support the needs of struggling adolescent learners in after-school programs.

Many practitioners find the Common Core overwhelming and have embraced thinking about the transition to the Common Core as six "shifts" (or changes) teachers and tutors need to make in order for their instruction to be standards-aligned. The final shift to a focus on Academic Vocabulary will be the focus for this discussion of vocabulary.
